Crime in the Gardens

When discussing crime in the neighborhood it is sometime useful to use rough classifications so that all readers are on the same page:
  • Burglary is the breaking and entering of any premise to commit a crime (generally unoccupied)

  • Robbery always includes a person or persons

  • Unattended theft is when something is taken from your open garage or vehicle

  • Motor vehicle theft occurs when your automobile is broken in or taken

  • Assault is usually a crime against a person or persons

  • Then, there are classifications such as rape, terroristic threatening, etc.

One must also be careful in reviewing two published reports from the Honolulu Police department; for instance the beat that includes most of the Gardens and the Valley also includes the Moanalua Freeway; secondly the Crime mapping feature on the internet for our area also includes parts of Kalihi, Mapunapuna and the Salt Lake area. A copy of the report is normally updated monthly in the documents tab.

Once you take all of that into account, Moanalua Gardens has a very low crime rate (except when it is your house). We are regularly patrolled and officers do attend our MGCA Board meetings every month. Having said all that it is vitally important that you call 911 and report any suspicious person or vehicle in the neighborhood. You and only you know who belongs here and it is your responsibility to let HPD sort out the ones that you don’t recognize. Please do not include “dog poop” in your reportage.
